Forest structure mediates topographic effects on salamanders’ abundance in European unmanaged forests

S. perspicillata abundances were higher in north-facing valley bottoms with lower canopy height and lower tree cover density, highlighting the importance of moist, topographically buffered habitats and the species’ spring movements toward streams for reproduction. In contrast, S. strinatii responded strongly to forest maturity and microhabitat complexity. Leer más.
