Genetic Inertia in Urban Populations of the Common Toad (Bufo bufo): Evidence from Nuclear and Mitochondrial DNA

Our results show that urban amphibian populations may temporarily preserve genetic diversity despite increasing habitat fragmentation. However, continued isolation could eventually lead to greater inbreeding and loss of adaptive potential. Maintaining ecological connectivity, for example, through green corridors and protection of breeding habitats, may therefore be important for the long-term conservation of amphibians in cities.
