The great crested newts which live in the Scottish Highlands can be found in the inner Moray Firth and Inverness area – but are separated by more than 80km of unfavourable habitat from the main areas where the newts live in Central Scotland, so most assumed that they were introduced into the north of Scotland. In collaboration with the Conservation Biology course taught by Dr. Karen Beard here at Utah State University, where I am a Ph.D. student, I have been involved in gathering life history data on ~400 species of reptiles that have been introduced outside of their native ranges for an analysis of how life history traits (e.g., diet, fecundity, longevity) interact with other factors to influence the likelihood of successful establishment.
