Es posible ver anfibios activos durante el día. Todos hemos visto ranas tomando el sol en la orilla de una charca o río que saltan al agua en cuanto nos acercamos, y no es raro ver sapos comunes o corredores durante el día, a veces incluso tomando el sol a la puerta de sus madrigueras. Pero lo cierto es que otras especies son estrictamente nocturnas y en general los anfibios despliegan su actividad fundamentalmente durante la noche. Y no durante cualquier noche, sino solo en las noches de determinadas épocas del año y con determinadas condiciones ambientales.

Critically Endangered Tree Frog Bred for First Time

As frogs around the world continue to disappear — many killed by a rapidly spreading disease called chytridiomycosis, which attacks the skin cells of amphibians — one critically endangered species has received an encouraging boost. Although the La Loma tree frog, Hyloscirtus colymba, is notoriously difficult to care for in captivity, the Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project is the first to successfully breed this species.

Dada como extinta no Vietnã há 20 anos, espécie volta ao país

Dado como extinto do país há mais de duas décadas, o crocodilo siamês (Crocodylus siamensis) começa a voltar ao Vietnã graças a programas de conservação e reintrodução da espécie. As informações são da agência EFE.

Contudo, de acordo com a União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza (IUCN, na sigla em inglês), a espécie ainda é uma das mais ameaçadas de extinção no planeta. A IUCN afirma que existem populações pequenas no Laos, Vietnã e Indonésia, sendo que na Tailândia ele é considerado virtualmente extinto.

For the Desert Tortoise, a Threat and an Opportunity

In an article in Wednesday’s Times, I write about how the fortunes of big solar power plants in the desert Southwest can hinge on the way developers handle imperiled wildlife in the path of their projects.

The protected desert tortoise has become the totemic animal for environmentalists fighting to ensure that the huge solar farms don’t eliminate essential habitat for the long-lived reptile and other wildlife, like the bighorn sheep and flat-tailed horned lizard.

The tortoise has been in decline for decades, and the rampant development of the desert – from casinos and strip malls to subdivisions and off road recreational vehicle areas – took their toll long before construction began late last month on the Ivanpah solar power plant, the first large-scale solar thermal project to be break ground in the United States in 20 years.
