The genus Pelophylax shows a complex taxonomic structure, encompassing hybridogenetic and cryptic species. The water frogs display various types of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, including forms with invasive haplotypes that are prevalent in the northern and northeastern parts of their ranges.
