Fire Salamanders in Belgium in big trouble – chytrid 2.0!

The novel fungal agent Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans that causes chytridiomycosis in fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra terrestris) has struck again in a Belgian population of fire salamanders. This disease has already caused the almost complete collapse of the entire Dutch population, reducing the population to a mere 4% of its former numbers.
