We hope to get an overall picture of what is loosely called the ‘herping community’—interests, preferences, and concerns. While not perfect, the survey provides a starting point useful in refining future data-gathering activities, informing regulatory policy and guidance, and focusing various organizations’ activities and efforts. A total of 40 species of reptiles was recorded within two herpetological surveys during May 2007 and April 2008 on Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong, northeastern Vietnam: one species of turtle, 19 species of lizards, and 20 species of snakes. We report about the rediscovery of the holotype of the Southeast Asian striped skink Lipinia vittigera and provide a detailed redescription together with photographs and drawings. The species was first described by George Albert Boulenger in 1894 as Lygosoma vittigerum based on a specimen collected by Elio Modigliani on the island of Sereinu (= Sipura), west of Sumatra.
