In North Africa, three species of large paleartic vipers have been recorded inside the genus Macrovipera sensu Herrmann et al., 1992 (Schleich et al., 2006). Several phylogenetic studies suggest the allocation of two of these species inside the genus Daboia (Lenk et al., 2001; Garrigues et al., 2005; Wüster et al., 2008; Pyron et al., 2011): D. mauritanica (Duméril & Bibron, 1848), and D. deserti (Anderson, 1892).
