 | La historia de Diego contrasta con la del famoso «Solitario Jorge», tortuga gigante única en su especie, que no ha logrado tener descendencia a pesar de múltiples esfuerzos por parte de investigadores. Diego corresponde a la especie Geochelone Hoodensis, de la isla Española, parte del archipiélago de Galápagos. En 1977, esta tortuga retornó a las islas Galápagos proveniente del zoológico de San Diego, California, y de ahí su nombre. A su arribo, Diego se integró en un grupo de dos tortugas machos y 12 hembras, que, al ser los únicos sobrevivientes de su especie, fueron conducidos al Parque Nacional Galápagos (PNG), en la isla Santa Cruz. |
