This illegal activity reached a devastating and absurdist extreme recently when a man reportedly smuggled a live crocodile onto a plane departing from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The crocodile got loose, the crew and passengers panicked, and the plane crashed, killing 20 people. |
An Ohio zoo said the longest snake living in captivity has died. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said workers found the 24-foot python Wednesday morning dead from an apparent tumor. The snake, named Fluffy, held the Guinness World Record as the longest snake living in captivity. It was about as long as a moving van and as thick as a telephone pole. It weighed 300 pounds. |  |
Scientists have discovered in China the first complete skeleton of a pivotal ancestor of Earth’s largest land animals — the sauropod dinosaurs. The new species, tentatively dubbed Yizhousaurus sunae, lived on the flood plains around Lufeng in the Yunnan Province of South China about 200 million years ago. The species helps explain how the iconic four-footed, long-necked sauropod dinosaurs evolved. |  |

 | La Diputació de Girona, amb la col·laboració de la Diputació de Barcelona, ha editat la ‘Guia de fauna vertebrada bàsica’ del Parc Natural del Montseny-Reserva dela Biosfera. Es tracta d’una guia visual feta exclusivament amb dibuixos i molt pràctica per dur-la a sobre i fer un reconeixement sobre el terreny. Els autors de les il·lustracions són Lluís i Marta Montañà. S’ha fet una selecció d’espècies comunes d’amfibis, rèptils, aus i mamífers, que solen ser les més fàcilment visibles, però també s’hi relacionen algunes espècies singulars, endèmiques (com és el cas del tritó del Montseny) o espècies amenaçades. La nova publicació és la segona guia bàsica, després de la publicació de la ‘Guia de flora bàsica’ l’any 2009. El llibre conté una introducció amb una breu referència al Parc Natural del Montseny, Reserva de la Biosfera, i un mapa de de vegetació per tal que el visitant es pugui fer una idea general del Montseny. Cada animal, a més del dibuix, té el nom en català i el nom científic. Al final es glossen els noms també en castellà, anglès i francès. |
