To better understand snake fungal disease (SFD), a team of researchers has conducted a genetic study of the pathogen. The goal was to determine whether SFD originated in the U.S. or was introduced from outside the country, which could provide a historical basis for how it emerged — and ultimately inform management of the disease. Using pickled snakes collected decades ago and stored in an underground bunker of collections, scientists have found ways to get DNA samples from specimens previously considered near-impossible to get genetic data from. Aquella magnífica tesis defendida en 1967 supuso (sin duda) un antes y un después en el conocimiento de los anfibios y reptiles norteafricanos. Era la tesis doctoral de Jacques Bons (1933-2022).

Casi treinta años más tarde en la Asociación Herpetológica Española tuvimos la suerte y el honor de publicar ese magnífico atlas de los herpetos marroquíes que él mismo y Philippe Geniez habían elaborado, y que ahora es todo un clásico.

Siempre hemos considerado a Bons uno de los nuestros y, ahora que el pasado 23 de junio se unió a la Mayoría, sentimos mucho su partida.
