We describe through integrative taxonomy a new species of snouted treefrog of the genus Scinax from white-sand forests of the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve in Central Amazonia, Brazil. Toads of the genus Atelopus are chemically defended by a unique combination of endogenously synthesized cardiotoxins (bufadienolides) and neurotoxins which may be sequestered (guanidinium alkaloids). Investigation into Atelopus small-molecule chemical defenses has been primarily concerned with identifying and characterizing various forms of these toxins while largely overlooking their ecological roles and evolutionary implications.  Leer más.

Las charcas o albercas terreras son pequeños depósitos de agua muy frecuentes en Sierra Nevada (Granada). Están situadas junto a un nacimiento y se construían excavando una cubeta y rodeándola con la propia tierra extraída, a veces con un murete de piedras a modo de dique. An integrative taxonomic analysis of Sundaic populations of Gekko smithii from the Thai-Malaya Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo recovered four deeply divergent mitochondrial lineages that are separated by major geographic barriers (mountains and seaways). Furthermore, they bear a number of concordant statistically significant differences in meristic and morphometric features, morphospatial separation in multivariate space, and discrete differences in color pattern.  Leer más.

Los anfibios son un grupo de animales vertebrados tetrápodos (dos pares de extremidades pentadáctilas) divididos en anuros (sin cola), urodelos (con cola) y cecílidos (sin patas), caracterizados por pasar de una vida larvaria acuática -con respiración branquial- a una fase adulta terrestre -con respiración pulmonar y cutánea-, menos dependiente del agua.
