A new species of siphonopid caecilian, Microcaecilia butantan sp. nov., is described based on four specimens from Belterra, in the State of Pará, Brazil. The new species differs from all other Microcaecilia in having a combination of more than 135 primary annuli and long premaxillary-maxillary tooth series that extend posteriorly beyond the choanae. Investigadores del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN), perteneciente al Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), y de la Universidad de Puerto Rico han descrito una nueva especie de rana que, recién descubierta, ya podría estar amenazada por los cambios ambientales. Se trata de una nueva especie de ‘Psychrophrynella’, género de ranas terrestres de la cordillera andina que vive en bosques de niebla y páramos húmedos de zonas de alta montaña. Leer más.

Rhacophorids are sometimes called flying frogs, shrub frogs, bush frogs, moss frogs, Old World treefrogs, or Afro-Asian treefrogs, and occur across sub-Saharan Africa, China, much of tropical Asia, Japan, the Philippines and Sulawesi. About 380 species are recognised as of early 2015. The last time I wrote about this group – December 2008 – this number was more like 290, so the rate at which new species are discovered and named is pretty impressive. Leer más.
