Jose Antonio Valverde describió en 1989 la subespecie “legionis” para los individuos de Naja haje de Marruecos, basándose en tres características: su coloración, folidosis y aislamiento genético. No obstante, estudios genéticos y morfológicos posteriores consideran que Naja haje legionis no es una subespecie válida debido a la mínima divergencia que muestran las poblaciones de la zona de estudio con la forma nominal de la especie (Broadley y Wüster, 2004 ; J.F.
