Por causas que todavía no se han acabado de dilucidar, más del 30% de especies se hallan en peligro de extinción, según la UICN. Se ha achacado al cambio climático, a la contaminación, a algún tipo de hongo y a la pérdida de hábitat, pero lo cierto es que la desaparición de comunidades enteras en cortos periodos de tiempo es un enigma para los científicos. Please join us in welcoming Hannah Lucas as our new Collection Manager at the Behler Chelonian Center. Hannah comes to us with many years of experience not only in data management, but also in care of turtle research collections and in the field. Most recently she worked with Bruce Bury’s team at the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center in Corvallis, Oregon studying native herpetofauna including the Western Pond Turtle Actinemys marmorata. This past January, a devastating veld (Dutch word for “field”) fire destroyed much of the last remaining Geometric Tortoise habitat on the Elandsberg Private Nature Reserve, which held the largest population of Geometric Tortoises. This trip allowed us to gain valuable insight from experts into the conservation needs of this spectacular tortoise and identify how the Turtle Conservancy can help save this species from extinction.
